Volunteering With an Organization To Help the Poor
Appalachia Service Project
I honestly, to this day do not know how Walrich's talked me into doing this-- but I did--and I found it totally worthwhile.
First of all--I am Catholic, not Methodist--didn't matter--any religion can help. I am a firm believer in that old parable 'Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day-- teach him how to fish and he can eat for a life time.' That is what this project is about, helping people with very little, poor, and no jobs get back on their feet.
I had a great time with these people from all over the United States that gave their money and time to help the less fortunate.
We did make the place better to live in by replacing the doors and windows. I am not very good at using saws and some of the other equipment needed for this project. After I almost cut my hand off and Fred's, they just had me do the more simple stuff--like just hold and they would cut. They all knew that I did not know how to do any of this before I went--but they still insisted that I go. I am glad that I went. I learned a lot, but more than anything else--it made me appreciate what I have more!!!!
